• HACCP-basedWater Safety Programs developed by theWorld Health
Organization have been proven effective for preventing waterborne
disease associated with building water systems (WHO 2007).
• In 2010, a HACCP water management program was developed and
implemented at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN yielding significant
improvements in building water system safety (Kraegschmidt 2014).
• Since 2000, the CDC has recommended HACCP-based water
management programs for facilities that have had outbreaks of
Legionnaires’ disease. There have been no subsequent outbreaks in
buildings following the recommended protocols.
Today in the US, these principles are being applied to the management
of building water systems in many hundreds of facilities. A summary of the
HACCP-based water management program is given in Table 2.
